  • Our research team conducted several experimental studies in different countries, using representative samples to test interventions aimed at encouraging pro-social behavior in response to online hostility. In these studies, some participants were shown an intervention video, which you can find an example of on this site, while others were not. Afterward, we observed how both groups behaved when interacting with an immersive mock social media platform.

We focused on key actions, such as reporting harmful content and leaving constructive comments, to see how the intervention influenced people’s responses. Our goal was to look at both immediate reactions and the longer-term effects of these interventions.

In one study, we tracked how these behaviors changed over time. This helped us understand whether the impact of the intervention lasted beyond the initial exposure. We also tested different video formats, including a longer version (1:20), 15-second, and 30-second clips. This allowed us to see how different lengths impacted participant behavior.

  • Participants who were shown the video were significantly more likely to report harmful content and leave constructive comments compared to those who did not see the video. In fact, they were six times more likely to take these actions, demonstrating that the video successfully encouraged pro-social behavior and helped people take action to address online hostility.

Even more importantly, the effects lasted well beyond the initial exposure. In one study, we followed participants over time and found that those who had seen the video continued to engage in positive actions—such as reporting harmful posts and speaking out against hostility—weeks later.

When looking at which video length was most successful, we found that the longer version (1:20) produced the most significant results. However, the 15-second and 30-second versions still showed meaningful improvements compared to the baseline group, proving that shorter videos can also have a significant impact.

Using our Intervention Video on Your Platform

We have created videos that can be easily integrated into your own platform to promote pro-social behavior and combat online hate. Here are some ways you can use the existing videos (you can find a Danish and English version on the right) we have available:

  • Share the intervention video as a post to remind your community of how they can interact constructively and respectfully. This serves as an ongoing prompt to encourage pro-social behavior.

  • Post the video as part of your community guidelines to help set the tone for your online space. This not only encourages positive engagement but also gives you a resource to direct people back to when they engage in hostile content.

  • When you encounter harmful or negative posts, post the video as a response. You can do this manually or set up an automated system to trigger the video based on detected hostility.

Adapting the Tools

You may choose to adapt the videos to better fit the needs of your community. Here are some ways you can do this, along with some things to keep in mind:

  • Depending on your community’s preferences, you may wish to adjust the video length. While the longer version (1:20) showed the most significant impact in our studies, both 15-second and 30-second formats also showed meaningful improvements. Select the version that aligns best with your community’s attention span and engagement style.

  • Feel free to modify the video's visuals, style, and tone to match your platform’s identity. Customizing the look and feel of the video helps it resonate more with your community, making it feel more authentic and engaging. However, be mindful that changes here may affect the impact of the results.

  • Different platforms require different approaches. Whether you’re sharing the video on social media, forums, or other spaces, adjust the format to suit your platform’s functionality. Embedding the video, sharing a link, or creating a post can all be effective ways to ensure the tool reaches your community.

  • You may also consider using an infographic version as an alternative or complement to the video. As a static format, it can be easily shared across platforms, and our research shows that it can produce similar effects to the shorter video in encouraging pro-social behavior online.
